The Government of María Chivite has already developed a three-lane road project, called model 2 + 1. That is, in some sections there are two roads in one direction, which facilitate the progress in a safe way and in other sections the two vials are in the opposite direction. The government wants to start with the tender for works for next summer.
The mayors of the area have questioned whether this model could prevent accidents, since several accidents, such as the last, have already occurred in this type of road. However, the new project provides for a metal barrier of about 60 centimeters high and a distance of two meters between the two directions, in order to avoid collisions in the opposite direction.
Faced with this project, and taking advantage of the debate generated by the deaths of Saturday, Navarra Suma (NS) has proposed to turn the road into a highway. As the current road improvements were carried out during the mandate of UPN, the PSN has responded why it did not build the highway. NS spokesman Javier Esparza replied that they did "many things", but they could not do everything.
Of the parties represented in the Foral Parliament, UPN is the only one that defends the highway in the Basque Country. The cost of the current Train 2+1 road, according to the public works directorate of the Government of Navarra, would be EUR 70 million, which would cost between EUR 900 and EUR 1,000, 13 times more than project 2+1.
According to the village mayors, there could be a key to diverting international heavy traffic on the A15 motorway and the Government of Navarra has informed them that they will study the issue. However, the transport union Hiru does not agree with this proposal, arguing that they have the right to use the road, as they believe that more kilometres should be done in the A15 and also with strong slopes.
