The loss of independence in Navarre in Donapaleu, the last capital of Navarre, is commemorated this Saturday
- The Nabarralde Foundation, Zabalik Elkartea and Hernani Errotzen have organised the Lo(r)aldia programme of Nafarroa, which will be launched on 3 October in Donapaleu. In that year the edict was signed which unified the kingdoms of Navarre and France, Luis XIII.ak, where the last trace of sovereignty of the former independent kingdom of Navarre was lost. At that time and for almost a century, Donapaleu, in Baja Navarra, was the capital of the Navarre crown.
400 years ago the unifying edict of the kingdoms of Navarra and France was signed in 1620, "a historic event that ended the most prosperous cultural era of Navarra", according to the organizers of the program Lo(r)aldia de Navarra. "In 1620, 400 years ago, a historical cycle closes: The most glorious, rich and high in Navarre culture. Despite the short time, it was the most culturally successful, but, unfortunately, it closed with a concrete political fact: Edict of Pau, which came from the hands of Louis XIII of France. Through this edict the king unified Navarre with the French crown and our territory definitively lost its sovereignty". The "Nafarroako Lo(r)aldia" programme, titled "Nafarroako Lo(r)aldia" of the Nabarralde Foundation, Zabalik Elkartea and Hernani Errotzen, aims to remove this very fruitful period from its oblivion.
Initially, the organizers intended to carry out the events in the new cultural center Caminos de Donapaleu. The road is located in the convent that the Franciscan monks have maintained there for a long time and has a great symbolism for the Basque and Abertzales of Amikuze and Iparralde, as there they housed Basques from all over Euskal Herria and was an important center of Basque culture. But the conditions brought by COVID-19 have forced to take lectures to the Donapaleu film and eat at the local bars.
The kingdom of Navarre lived its agony in the North in the 16th century. The conquest of Castile by military force also suffered in Baja Navarra in 1512 and, therefore, organized an act called "Day of the Unconquest" in Amikzi in 2012 on the occasion of his fourth centenary. In Garruze, a memorial for this event was also placed, because the Castilian troops had burned it under the pretext of the conquest. In the presentation of the Saturday event, the writer and historian Jean Louis Davant stated that Iparralde and especially Nafarroa Beherea have been the most faithful territories to the State and the Crown of Navarre:
