The WHO has analyzed 900 scientific publications from around the world and the main conclusion they have reached is that art can contribute to physical and mental health. According to Piroska Östlin, a member of the WHO, the report published by the organization shows examples of how to deal with diabetes, obesity or mental health problems through art, “they understand health and well-being in a broader social and community context and offer solutions that have not so far given conventional medical practices.”
The report stresses that the use of art not only yields good results, but that some practices may be more profitable than conventional biomedical treatments. They're not new discoveries, because disciplines like music therapy are developing more and more, and the art of sweetening some hard treatments like chemotherapy is quite widespread.
It is new that the WHO has for the first time investigated art, health and well-being in a global and large-scale way and has called on the authorities to integrate art into the health system. The authors of the report conclude that many views and methodologies have been found on the potential value of the arts in meeting basic health limits and call on WHO participating countries to develop long-term strategies and policies to improve cooperation between art and the health sector.
