That's the question. How is that possible? Years. Since the idea came to the Elkano Foundation, to the coordination work of directors and writers, the time needed to meet, accept, celebrate and spend the grant requests of the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the Government of Spain. Number of meetings to be held under the same conditions as EiTB aid. To know how many hands, heads and voices on the way to making this film, how many kinds of cribs, how many critical opinions can be given. And no one has stood up for a moment from the editing program, raised the head of the script, raised the back of the chair, had a revelation at the time he's about to fall asleep, and said: Hey, what is this we're doing?
I want to believe that someone did, but I would say something. Someone would realize that after 500 years there has been a children's film that reinforces the same colonial, racist and chauvinist look, and what, and that they intend to project it in the Philippines with complete peace of mind, where Elkano and Magellan took the first steps of Spanish colonialism, and also putting it in the role of the evil Lapu-Lapu, symbol of the liberation of their peoples.
But there may be a large group of people who agree with that and who have voted so “different” in our Basque Country. Colonialism did not begin in the 15th century and ended the independence of the colonies, as we were well reminded at the anti-colonial table of the Feminist Conference. Nothing is over, nobody is safe, because colonialism is a way of looking at the world, of existing above others. That is why we can remove from the films the cruellest parts of the texts of Pigaffeta, who travelled with Elkano and Magellan, who talk about slavery, rape and murder, and nothing happens. The story is written by the winners, and the heirs of the winners are rewritten each year to last forever.
It is also said that the characters in the film about Elkano are a mere copy of those appearing in El Dorado Road, and the truth is that it is a shame. But what a surprise if both have the same imperialist view, even if one is installed in the Philippines and the other in Mexico. And we've grown up looking at them. Gold, Pocahontas, the ETB2 Indian and Cowboy series and the stereotypes of indigenous peoples have become carnival costumes.
A few years ago, we were lucky enough to travel to Mexico, to the meetings of Ibero-American improvisers. Among the protocolary initiatives of the program was the inauguration of a mural that had just been painted in a church. Mayors, priests and other personalities came along. When the sheet covering the wall was rejected, we froze the three Basque girls. It was a mural in honor of those who had «spread» Christianity in Mexico, where the Abades, with beatings in their hand, taught to read the Indians, gave clothes, forced them to work in the field. The three Europeans held an urgent meeting very soon to decide what to sing about the mural. Finally, we said that this was a conquest and that before the arrival of Europeans there were beliefs and cultures in those territories. Most of the other improvisers simply paid tribute to Christianity. And even though I would have sung the same thing today, I know that I felt a kind of paternal pity towards them, because a little revolutionary pride was more discarded than its own inhabitants. Once again, a white European feels superior to the others, this time the non-white Europeans tell them how they should judge what the European targets did to them.
Two friends offered a small rap performance in the plaza and musutruk, after a simple popular meal. With a song, we were reminded that a neighbor, a young man, recently passed away. Money had to be raised to return the body to its hometown. Oh, that mother of mine! Your child's... [+]
