Guaidó calls for global mobilisation, with EU support
- Maduro has launched a proposal for dialogue with the opposition, which has called for "dialogue". Europe has allowed Venezuela until Sunday to convene elections in the Caribbean country.
“On Saturday we are demonstrating for democracy in Venezuela and around the world,” announced the leader of the National Assembly and the opposition, Juan Guaidó. The US and the EU are trying to strengthen Maduro’s government: The United Kingdom, France, Germany and Spain, among others, have asked the President of the Government, Nicolás Maduro, to leave the Executive and to convene new elections. They have set him a deadline until Sunday, and if he does not, they threaten to accept Guaidó as president.
The Venezuelan Army showed its willingness to Maduro the day after the coup, but recently Guaidó has asked the military to act "with common sense". He has announced that, if the government succeeds, the Amnesty Act will be implemented and will rise against Maduro. On the other hand, he asked to let the goods enter, while denouncing that Maduro does not: “Unlike Maduro’s government, you need to let medicines and food in.”
Maduro looks out
The president has accused the EU of "pride" over the weekend and warned that it will not meet the deadline set by it to convene the elections: “No one can give us an ultimatum.”
The day after the coup, Maduro went to the United States to request the withdrawal of the embassies, which gave him a period of 72 hours. After the deadline, they have complied with the request: The United States Government has withdrawn its diplomacy in Caracas.
