“A transsexual who committed suicide without being able to overcome social barriers to be what he wanted to be.” This is what the plaque on Moio Street in Aimar Elosegi Ansa, opened in Hernani on May 14, says. They have taken another step in the review of the street “purple magnifier”, promoted by the Department of Equality of Hernani, and on this occasion it was inaugurated on the occasion of the International Day against LGTB phobia.
Dozens of friends, family and citizens met at the opening of Saturday to pay tribute to Elosegi as a simple tribute. They recalled that 15 years ago his death was a milestone to awaken against Hernani’s transphobia and paved the way for the next, putting on the table the reality of transsexuals. Brayan Altimasberes, a member of the association Loratuz Lotura, thanked Elosegi “on behalf of all those who have taken his witness” and stressed that he had the figure of Moio very much in his life.
In 2019 Kattalin Miner Moio. He published a book that was impossible to preserve, focused on his friend's suicide and transsexuality, and also as a memory exercise. Now they take another step to collect Elosegi's memory, named Moio to Biteri Street: “Today is much more than the opening, the memory is part of a collective exercise,” the organizers stressed. The Gobara podcast of the Hernani Intercultural Feminist Square has also been offered to Elosegi, where Miner and Altimasberes have talked about transsexuality, among other issues.
In recent years, the Hernani City Hall has been reviewing the street because of the need to “adapt the streets to reality”, according to the statement of EH Mayor Bildu, Xabier Lertxundi: “All of us outside Heteronorma must take the streets, also the names of the streets.”
Elosegi's relatives also took the floor in the tribute, excited and grateful to the attendees: “With this action we will close the suffering of 15 years to start a new cycle.” The tribute rapporteurs have stressed that in order to avoid Elosegi’s suicide, many steps still need to be taken, and they have called on to participate in the demonstrations on 17 May and to claim against LGTB phobia. “There is no better homage than to keep fighting” end the act filled with emotion, between applause and music.
