Mobilizations and debates in Gasteiz, on the eve of the vote on Unconditional Basic Income in Parliament
- On January 4, the 22,075 signatures received in favor of the Unconditional Basic Income were presented to Parliament for processing as a bill. On 5 May, parliamentarians will discuss: "they have in their hands the change of life of people, especially the most vulnerable in our society."
The popular legislative initiative for the Unconditional Basic Income for the CAPV will be debated and voted on Thursday in the plenary of the Basque Parliament. If the majority of parliamentarians and parliamentarians vote in favour, the procedure will be opened as ordinary law. According to the bill’s driving platform, “the citizens of the CAPV will be able to find a tool to end poverty, put life at the centre, distribute employment and share the work, in short, turn the Basque Country into a social reference”.
They have already collected over 22,000 signatures in favour of the initiative and have been supported by 80 social organisations. They explained that in the vote on 5 May parliamentarians hope that the opportunity will be taken to “commit to a social model that puts life at the centre of public policies”. Furthermore, they have reaffirmed that the people continue to bet on being protagonists of political life, because the road to date has been and want it to remain a popular process.
Mobilisation, reflection and debate in Vitoria-Gasteiz
In this regard, a press conference was held on Wednesday to publicise the initiatives they have organised these days. Then there will be a walk through the center of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Until the end of the debate in plenary, they have placed a tent before the Basque Parliament under the motto “It is time for unconditional basic income”. Around this tent, there will be acts of mobilization, reflection and debate for citizen participation.
They will end with an exposition by the promoter of the popular legislative initiative, with the intervention of the plenary on 5 May, in defense of the need to process the Unconditional Basic Income as a law.
“In short, in the tent, before the Basque Parliament, the voices of social movements and people inform us that in the Basque Country, and outside of our community, they have expressed their vote in favour of the ILP which has managed to reach the parliamentary procedure of the 5th day, after collecting 22,075 signatures, more than twice the 10,000 signatures required by the EAE Law, and have explained the necessary parliamentary majority vote.”
