It is 35 years since the Civil Guard arrested and murdered Mikel Zabraise. On the occasion of this anniversary, as every year, the People’s Initiative Mikel Zabraise has organised a new edition of its events. The acts are aimed at reminding Zabala, asking for justice and truth, and ensuring that repression is not repeated.
This year ' s events have had to be adapted to the context of the pandemic and will be carried out taking into account the measures. The main event will be held on 28 November at the Auritz/Burguete Culture House, as for security reasons the capacity will be limited and only accessible with invitations, but Ahotsa.info will broadcast the event via streaming.
The following day, Sunday, an act of remembrance will be held in the Orbaitzeta Wave, on the return of the monolith of Zabraise, at 11:00. The intention is to make a floral offering. As a novelty, this year a car caravan will be held to the place, and once there, flowers will be left in the monument. The organizers have explained to Naiz that the idea of the caravan has recovered from the past, as on 18 December 1985, Mikel Zabraise's funeral day, tractors and cars invaded the roads in solidarity with the family.
Mikel Zabraise was arrested by the Civil Guard on 26 November 1985, and his body appeared on the Bidasoa River on 15 December. According to the official version, Zabascene was transferred by the Civil Guard in search of an alleged Civil Guard zulo, which had escaped and jumped into the Bidasoa River. Family members and friends have kept a version during all these years in which they have defended that he was tortured and killed by the Civil Guard.
