The decline in migratory flows has led to a 76 per cent drop in the foreign population
- Regarding the impact of the pandemic on migratory flows, 4,777 people of foreign origin were registered in the CAPV during 2020. As of January 1, 2021, there were 246,501 persons of foreign origin registered in the CAV, 11.1% of the total population.
According to data published by the Basque Immigration Observatory, Ikuspegi (PDF), although the number of registered immigrants has increased, flows to the community have decreased by 75.8% compared to the previous year.
According to historical territories, Álava had the highest percentage of foreign population (13%), followed by Gipuzkoa (11.2%) and Bizkaia (10.6%). In Navarre, for its part, the number of unemployed stands at 16.4%.
Most births occurred in some Latin American country (51.7%), 14.8% in the EU and 14.2% in the Maghreb.
Feminization, related to care
The population of foreign origin in the CAV is "feminized", according to the NGO report. That is, there are more women (52.4%) than men (47.6%). However, this distribution varies according to its origin and territory. Those from Africa, both in the Sub-Sahara and in the Maghreb, are mostly men: about 6 out of 10. At the other end, 61.2% of the people of Latin American origin registered in the CAPV are women. "The origin of these differences will be understood according to the needs of Basque society, since each area has more or less possibilities of insertion into the Basque labour market".
Over the years, the percentages of countries of origin have changed. Latin America has been the main area, has consistently remained above 45 per cent and has been increasing. "The reason for these differences must be sought in Basque society, since the profile that demands, to a large extent, is related to domestic service and care".
