The Irun Reception Network requests the dismantling of the space destined for migrants in the gaztetxe and that the center that has the City Hall be a shelter for all
- Migrants who are in transit and are outside official facilities have so far been welcomed by citizens in the Gaztetxe Lakaxita de Irun. Two months later, the camp has been dismantled, considering that it does not meet the minimum conditions necessary for the passenger evacuation operation. "From the very beginning we have denounced the situation," says the Irun Reception Network, and the responsibility lies with the City Hall: the administration has a centre for migrants in Irun (Martindozenea), but because of the conditions demanded many people are left out and the Reception Network wants to change these conditions.
Migrants are asked to spend a maximum of five days in the hostel, have less than 30 days in the Spanish State and have a police document to be able to sleep in Martindozenea. The Irun Reception Network has denounced that it leaves out people and that they also do not receive anyone during the day (so they do not have where to go) and has called for the conditions to be changed. Instead, the City Council has put in place an interim solution to welcome in another area migrants who are no longer in the gaztetxe Lakaxita and who are not admitted to Martindozenea.
This is not the solution, according to the Reception Network: they have asked for a dignified and comprehensive reception, and they are clear that Martindozenea is a space that can pay due attention. Martindozenea must welcome all migrants, even during the day. "As we have called for from day one, we believe that it is the institutions that have to respond and solve these needs, using the means at their disposal to do so and guaranteeing decent minimum conditions".
"Let them see us."
Once the camp has been dismantled, the citizens continue to press and as the administration does not give them shelter during the day, they have moved to the heart of the city: To Plaza de San Juan (where the City Hall is located). During the day, the activities that were organized in the gaztetxe will begin to take place in the gaztetxe: "Let them see us. Let the public see what is happening. Let the City Hall see what is happening. We want to make visible the deficiencies of the institutional model of reception".
