Mothers and feminist collectives of victims of violence occupy the Mexican Human Rights Commission
- The two mothers protested a week ago at the refusal of the Commission on Human Rights to give a solution to the violence suffered by their sons and daughters. Feminist collectives joined the protest and occupied the headquarters of the Commission on Human Rights, which has turned it into a centre for the care of victims of violence.
Following the events of 2 September, the Human Rights Commission of Mexico City (CNDH) has welcomed mothers and feminist collectives of victims of male violence and disappearances. The occupations are based on a meeting held on Wednesday at the Ertzaintza headquarters in which Rosario Piedra Ibarra chairs the commission which brought together relatives of several victims of sexual abuse and forced disappearance. Among her relatives was Marcela Aleman, the mother of a child who had suffered sexual abuse at school in 2017, to seek justice for her daughter. The German, seeing that Piedra Ibarra did not provide a solution to his demands, chained himself to a chair to claim compliance with what he required. Germany was joined by Silvia Castillo, the mother of the 19-year-old who last year was removed and killed, and they closed in Egoitz.

The following day, the relatives of the missing persons who since February were concentrated in front of the offices of the Executive Commission for Victim Care (CEAV) joined the protest, and on Friday 4 September the feminist collective Ni Una Menor (not one less woman in Basque) announced that they would not go until the requirements were met. The congregated feminists have occupied the building and turned the residence into a shelter for the victims, under the name of “Okupa, Casa de Refugio Ni Una Menor”. The objective is to provide accompaniment, legal advice, food and accommodation to people who have suffered machista, institutional or political violence.
Family members and feminists of the victims formed in the first days of the occupation a request sheet for the resolution of the conflict with the following requirements: immediate care for women victims of male violence, access to medical services for these victims, creation of a program of demissal, program of employment with a gender perspective, budgetary reassignment to urgent measures called the Gender Violence Alert, withdrawal of the feminist movement “Account up to 10” (Up to 10). In addition to responding to requests, Piedra was also requested to resign. However, despite the fact that the demands remain on the table, the possibility of evicting the occupied building has ceased to be a possibility for those inside.
Although the Commission on Human Rights issued a letter on Monday asking the occupants to leave the building and invited to the interview, the members of Casa de Refugio Ni Una Menor have stated that they no longer intend to evict the building. Yesenia Zamudio, mother of Jesus Marichuy Jaimes Zamudio, a minor killed in 2016, said: “This is a definitive occupation, we do not surrender it, it is an occupation for the victims. Here you will live the orphan palms of the father and mothers of the victims who do not live where they live. We will not deliver it, there is no negotiation and that they do it as they want.”
