The multitudinous march in Donostia-San Sebastián calls for the metro to be stopped and the responsibilities for the damage caused by the works to be removed
- Convened by the neighborhood movement Satorralaia, several citizens have taken to the streets of Donostia-San Sebastián to participate in the protests. They have denounced the extra cost of the project and have called for the works to be stopped.
Hundreds of people have spoken this afternoon in San Sebastian under the slogan ‘What else should happen? Now is the time: clear up responsibilities, stop the metro definitively.’ Departing from the Koldo Mitxelena Kulturunea, they have traveled the streets of the city center with messages, slogans and banners against the metro. The march has been multitudinous and the protesters have stood in three rows, in the streets of the city. The demonstrators have travelled the way between Koldo Mitxelena and Bulebarra, and have joined the street protest.
At the end of the mobilization, neighbours Ana Gorostidi and Marisa Urra have read the message of the Satorralaia movement. They denounce the serious irregularities in the construction of the metro, which will involve an overrun of around EUR 50 million: "As a result of the accident at Zubieta Street and for overruns above 80%, the works of the underground building have had to be suspended. This is scandalous. In the face of this immense uproar, we are demonstrating to demand that the responsibilities be clarified and that this macro-project that is being carried out in society be definitively stopped”.
In his opinion, the serious problems that have arisen in the work merely confirm the “nonsense” of the project: “The Metro project has not taken into account the risk of destabilizing the subsoil of Centro and Amara, built on sandy grounds by the river tide of San Sebastian, and has been designed with great ignorance.” In addition, they have expressed their concern about the "obscurantism" that the institutions have shown in the face of this situation that has generated the alarm and that "leaves no room for doubt".
Moreover, they have denounced that the waste of public resources is “unjustifiable”, even more so in the current crisis situation: “It would be better to invest these funds in health, education, housing, care, pensions and social services.”
Members of the resident movement Satorralaia have expressed their intention to continue working and have ensured that they will continue to fight against the suburban and the subway pass. They have called on the citizens to join the mobilisations that will take place.
