“In 2016, several producers started supplying Allende Salazar’s dining room and a baserritarras network was created. That brought with it mutual knowledge, empathy and complicity. In the end, synergies are created for the common good,” says Zelaia Zugadi. Those who worked together had been thinking about creating a website for direct selling for some time, but they finally got started in March last year. It was created during confinement, but it was not a containment instrument, but it was launched with the intention of maintaining it over time.
Gernika’s project is collaborative, makes decisions among all and understands food sovereignty as one more piece to gain hegemony. “We have to be aware that we are still marginal: Only 10% of what we eat in Euskal Herria is what we produce there, and the products of our refrigerator have in many cases been around 5,000 kilometers.”
About 30 people from different farms supply the web market, where you can find everything: fresh vegetables, bread, dairy, fruit, meat, mushrooms, jams, honey, fish preserves… “It’s a Monday market, but brought to a virtual stand”.
Citizens have a deadline until noon on Wednesday to submit their requests to the elections. The payment is made over the internet and then food can be collected in two ways: They can be picked up at the Baserritik Gernika project site on Thursday afternoon or at home on Friday morning. Those who go on to pick up the purchase pay two euros and those who receive it four. “We use it to prepare baskets, logistics and web management costs,” explains the colleague. They are satisfied with the response that the project has had during these months, as the market place has not only kept the people of the past, but also the online fair has achieved its own clients.
