In the hearing of the PSE candidate for lehendakari, Idoia Mendia, some 40 party activists have been applauded by the initiative. He has started his speech by thanking the media, the party members, “and of course, the Basques who have trusted us.” Those who voted in his favor “have trusted that in this new historic moment that we live we will also live up to, and feel free to do so.” In addition, he added that each vote will serve to "rebuild, in economic and social terms, the Basque Country and its consequences".
“There are no excuses”
Mendia regretted the low turnout, “especially when we are at such a difficult time in social and economic terms, and a strong government would be good.” But he added that people are free to vote or not and that the data of participation in the parliament that is to be set up does not detract from their legitimacy; "there is no excuse, we are at least not going to make an excuse."
“We would have liked a better result”
The PSE lehendakari candidate has said that despite the big abstention, they have gone up and the result is good (they have got one more seat than in 2016, 10), and that this result is the result of a long way, of one election to another. “We would have had a crisis, but the outcome has not changed.” Mendia believes that the Socialists’ commitment to stability has something to do with the situation. He also said that they liked a better result, “but we have achieved our rightful place: the leadership of the non-nationalist Left. Some also told us that we would achieve marginal results, but that’s not the case.” He wanted to make it clear that the Socialist Party has been strengthened from these elections.
He has once again thanked those who have accompanied him since he presented himself to the General Secretariat of the party six years ago: “We haven’t had a moment of rest, but we haven’t stopped working.” He explained that this result is the result of the work of many councillors, Members and militants. “I can’t be more proud.”
Hauspoa to the Government of Pedro Sánchez
Idoia Mendia has also thanked the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, who “has always relied on the socialists of the Basque Country and on the politics we carry.” He has made it clear that he has spoken to Sanchez tonight and has ratified that confidence. He also stressed that the results obtained in the CAV “have further strengthened Sánchez’s project”.
However, Idoia Mendia has also recalled that the PNV has been the great winner and has called to congratulate Iñigo Urkullu on his triumph. Finally, he recalled those who died from COVID-19 and their relatives.
