After 43 years, the afternoon of Sunday and the weekend of the carnivals, thousands of people have returned to the streets of Vitoria-Gasteiz to ask for justice and remember Pedro María Martínez Ocio, Francisco Aznar, Romualdo Barroso, José Castillo and Welcome Pereda killed by the National Police on 3 March 1976. Five were killed and thousands wounded, but none of the culprits were prosecuted.
Before the beginning of the demonstration of the day, the members of the Association 3 of March have taken the floor, focusing on three axes:
- Impunity: “Impunity continues, but also the passion for fighting.”
- Martin Villa and Memory Gara: Vitoria-Gasteiz recalled Martín Villa’s declaration as ‘persona non grata’ and called for the Church of March 3 to become a space of memory and human rights, in tune with the Memoria Gara initiative.
- They call to participate in the Feminist Strike on Friday: “Memory must also be feminist.”
Joint call to get out of “trenches”
As last year, they have manifested themselves in the streets of Vitoria-Gasteiz called by unions and groups of the popular movement in a mobilisation led by photos of the five workers. In addition, the word JUSTICIA in capital letters and the motto agreed by the unions with the agents of the popular movement have been present: “Building the future. Come together, fight, move forward.”
In the plaza de los Fueros they denounce that steps are being taken backwards in social rights: “Fascism, racism and xenophobia are used to cut rights by distributing workers.” In this sense, the agents of the popular movement have called to join forces, fighting day by day and taking out each of their “trenches”.
In this event, they have warned that next Friday women, the Boleros and the trans will take the streets “with force”: “The feminist revolution demands the politicization of life. Feminism is not convenient, it is a radical political practice.”
They have also reminded the pensioners who go out to the streets every Monday and the “young people who want to condemn violent precarization”: “From the youth perspective we reaffirm ourselves in the commitment to confront the system and deepen the war between the classes. Because we want to decide and live in Euskal Herria, we will close the doors to the precariousness that goes through our lives”. Before the central event, the different expressions of the youth movement have carried out a Youth Block.
With regard to the Biarritz G7 summit, they pointed out that during those days we will be under police occupation: “The economic policies imposed on other countries will be decided there.” And finally, they have pointed out that in Euskal Herria there is a need for another model: “We need sovereignty to achieve social justice, solidarity and equality”.
