Three rescue vessels have rescued 818 migrants and refugees in several operations carried out in recent weeks in the Mediterranean Sea. The Ocean Viking ship of the NGO SOS Méditerranée transports 555 people, while the boat Sea Watch 3 of the NGO of the same name, 263, is somewhat lower than the ResQship. All three have declared that they have exceeded their maximum capacity and are seeking "urgently" a port to land those rescued in the area.
The majority of those rescued come from Morocco, Bangladesh, Egypt and Syria, according to data from Euronews they have published. The Ocean Viking team has reported that there are 28 women and 33 minors among them. Two-thirds of the latter have arrived in the Mediterranean without the help of their bosses, who have been arrested.
The rescues have taken place in a state of life and death: many migrants and refugees have had to jump into the water because of the collapse of their boats. On the other hand, many of the migrants and refugees who have taken refuge in the country have been in extreme health. Several people have lost their knowledge on the boat. The Ocean Viking medical team has explained that patients are “evaluating, treating and monitoring”.
For the time being, only one of the people on board the Sea Watch has been evacuated because of the serious conditions in which it was in. The NGOs have asked Italy and Malta to provide a safe port to land the rest of the rescued.
