He received 67 votes in favour and only five abstentions – those of Elkarrekin-Podemos and Vox – the candidate for Ararteko by the PNV and the PSE-EE, Manu Lezertua, this Thursday in the Basque Parliament. Lezertua has also received support from the Abertzale left for the first time; in 2015 EH Bildu presented another candidate, but on this occasion the independence coalition has decided to support Ararteko in the last five years.
Lezertua becomes the first Ararteko to take office for the second time in the first consecutive year after five years. Elkarrekin-Podemos explained that they abstained because the candidacy "has not been agreed with the opposition", according to EiTB reporting to the EFE agency.
Lezertua, born in Bilbao in 1957, is a lawyer and has been working as a lawyer at the European Court of Human Rights for many years.
This year marks the 51st anniversary of the United Nations proclamation of International Human Rights Day on 10 December. This date has become important in Euskal Herria and the Human Rights Observatory of Euskal Herria wants to offer some elements of reflection.
