No, it wasn't Zartzuela's premiere or a Hitchcock movie. It has not been seen in the Official Selection of the San Sebastian Film Festival and may not be presented in the official armchair of Victoria Eugenia. It's better than that.
There is a small room under the armchair of the great Victoria Eugenia Theatre in San Sebastian. Not far from being the home of Sator, creations, stories and voices from the corner are usually told. They are small, but also very charming. Telmo Irureta wanted to tell us about his life, how his cerebral palsy has influenced his conception of the world, and how the world has not developed the ways of looking at it.
The author presents his work at the Human Rights Film Festival. It combines cinema and theatre. In the first quarter of an hour the spectator will see a short film called Agua y Honduran, in which Telmo’s mother will be the main protagonist. As he later tells us, from his mother’s perspective he wanted to tell his story because one of the concerns that this situation generates is the impact it generates on others. Her starting point will be a letter from her mother, so the short film, a letter to her son. Start the writing with the story of a beach day. Telmo, who was two years old, tells him how he remembers her. That moment was the beginning of this whole process and he writes a lot more about it. We have also felt what the word cannot explain, because the dance, the image and the body have a great force in the film.
I would say that the only real character in this episode is Irureta herself, since those who represent the family and those around them are the actors. The conversation after the end of the short film that takes the form of the theater also has this: although the role of the interviewer is played by Dorleta Urretabizkaia, who represents Telmo’s childhood caretaker. The close relationship between them makes the moment even more intimate and close and seems to be telling you in the ear with the use of space.
He also uses irony, humor, sarcasm and various metaphors to reach the viewer and show his attitude towards life. That is Irureta, as he has always shown, but he also offers us his most sensitive part in this work. All emotions are equally important: simple and not so simple. Difficult and not so difficult. Good and bad, yes, because they're bad too. But the bad and the good, because it also has the good. From time to time he will speak to the little Telmo, and from time to time to a hypothetical Telmo. Of despair, of opportunities, of those around you, of people, of love, of youth...
The performance has nothing of fiction, because the protagonist only reveals truths. And a few phrases that will make the audience feel uncomfortable. When he says those that take on a different meaning and that inevitably leads the recipient to reflect on the position we take in life. This is a very quick decision. It has taught us that there are ways and means to crush the earth without the intention of removing the burden.
