The fight against the demolition of the Lope de Vega buildings has demonstrated strength in Itzubaltzeta/Romon de Getxo
- Convened by the platform for the protection of the buildings located on Lope de Vega 12 street in Itzubaltzeta/Romo, the village's neighbours held a massive demonstration on Sunday. "Once again, it has become clear that the neighborhood is in favour of conserving these buildings, even though the Getxo City Hall and the Bizkaia Foral Council have repeatedly denied it," the protesters stressed.
The demonstration on Sunday was another step in defense of the buildings of Lope de Vega 12 street. The callers have recalled that in recent years there have been thousands of men and women who have supported this movement: "Proof of this are the collections of signatures, pasacalles, concentrations, demonstrations and the popular consultation held on 8 May." Therefore, they consider it "clear" that the neighbors "bet" on the conservation of these buildings. Thus, they have asked the local PNV and the PSE-EE to withdraw their intention to demolish these infrastructures: "You cannot play with the dignity and history of a neighborhood and its inhabitants; it is our heritage, it is our history, it is our identity".
On 7 February the City of Getxo transferred to the Provincial Council of Bizkaia the buildings of Itzubaltzeta/Romo to start the construction of a new intergenerational centre in that building. In fact, the government team has pointed out that both institutions signed an agreement for this purpose, which will allow the Provincial Council to have a direct and free concession on some of the buildings for a period of 75 years, with the City Hall reserving ownership of the land.
Thus, Azpiegiturak, the foral company responsible for the execution of the work, is in charge of executing the project of demolishing the building and construction of the new center.
Demolition, ever closer
On Monday, local residents told HIRUKA that the Azpiegiturak and Redenor companies had access to the buildings for the "demolition" work. That is why citizens have today convened an open meeting for today at 18:30 in the Casa Baratos to plan what they will do in the coming days.
