Tolosaldea is a region surrounded by mountains, and so are all the villages in the region. There are also thousands of routes, and one of them is the Lizardi route located in Tolosa.
In Zarautz was born Jose Maria Agirre Egaña, better known as Xabier Lizardi, 125 years ago. He came to live in Tolosa at about ten years old, and he was a writer and, above all, a poet. He was also a member of the Basque Cultural Renaissance movement, and the monument to his memory is located in a corner of Tolosa.
There are different routes to reach the place where the monument is located, but the shortest route is that which is part of the San Esteban neighborhood. Following the paved road or paths that climb between the dwellings, you reach the intersection of the rural house Korteta. There, two options: follow the red markings and climb up Korteta, or take the Mutitegi farmhouse and go up directly.
Following this second option, you pass through the back of the Mutitegi farmhouse and meet a crossing. The route between Montezkue and Urkizu can be reached by following the blue marks. However, at the junction we take the path to the left and then we see a wooden arrow that puts Lizardi. Following this path, you reach the area where the monument is located. The famous poet often travelled these places and, as a witness, the monument erected in his memory.
Next to the monument is a sign that leads to Dbukurri, and on this 450 meter trail you can find some of the best known poems that Lizardi has written. Poets have been written on plates attached to wooden poles. Currently, upon arriving at Dbukurri, the route is closed by a barrier, so you have to return to the area where the monument is located and from there return to the urban center of Tolosa or take another path.
Following the pink marks, Korteta comes to the country house, or, following the hill that rises from the monument, this path also goes to the road that goes from Montezkue to Urkizu, and is a good opportunity to make a drink of water at the Urkizu fountain, enjoy its places and return to Tolosa.
END OF JOURNEY
To finish the tour, the plaza of the Basque Renaissance can be the ideal place. In 2013 he received this name the plaza located next to the Aranburu Palace. Aitzol, Lizardi and his generations, among others, will pay tribute to the work done in favor of the Basque Country and the Basque culture.
Joan Tartas (Sohüta, 1610 - date of unknown death) is not one of the most famous writers in the history of our letters and yet we discover good things in this “mendre piece” whose title, let us admit it from the beginning, is probably not the most commercial of the titles... [+]
