The director of the music band of Lekeitio receives complaints of harassment
- The City Council of Lekeitio reports that the directors of the band have been mistreated through various testimonies. The City Council explains that, following the advice of the Basque Government, they have taken several steps, including talking to the Director and receiving testimonies by email and in person. The City Council will terminate the director’s contract at the end of this month, taking into account allegations of mistreatment and other reasons.
On March 5, the city council received an anonymous e-mail, which, according to the local organization itself, reported a series of ill-treatment by the director. The message narrated the treatment suffered by several members of the band for many years, reporting several testimonies. At the request of advice from the Basque Government, three steps were taken to study the subject: to give explanations to the band director; to open the address kaltetuak.lekeitiokoudala@gmail.com to receive direct testimonies; and to receive face-to-face testimonies. The City Council has received a dozen complaints, including those of minors.
Various reasons for cancellation of the director's contract
In Lekeitio, there has been controversy over the band’s director and the band itself, with more issues involved than the harassment complaint. The band’s director was terminated by the city council in February 2024. In fact, the band is managed by an association, it is not a municipal band, but the director was under the contract of the city council. The City Council has indicated that, on several occasions, the employee has been asked to obtain the corresponding degree in order to be hired by the City Council, but the Director has not presented a degree. Despite the cancellation of the contract in February 2024, the city council decided to keep the contract until the end of this month, trying to find a solution through negotiations. The City Council confirms that since the band is managed by the Lekitto Music Band association, the director would not have to be paid by the City Council. He adds that for a small town like Lekeitio it is “wrong” to allocate 100,000 euros to the band.
The EITB states that it has spoken with the board and the director of the association and that the allegations of ill-treatment have been described as “false”. According to the EITB, “it is a municipal maneuver” to make the band disappear. Naiz has received the news that the Lekitto Music Band has decided to suspend its activity. Soy says that not all members of the band agree with the reading.
