In December the Basque Housing Observatory presented a report on the areas of tension in Araba, Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia. In addition to explaining the conditions to be a tense space, the towns that met these conditions are listed; Lekeitio is not listed for the “surprise” of the City Hall of Lekeitio.
For this reason, the City Council has asked the Vice Ministry of the Basque Government to inform us of the concrete data used for the elaboration of the diagnosis of Lekeitio and the indicators that served as the basis for the collection of such data: “We have asked the Basque Government to take action against the unsustainability of housing.”
The City Council disagrees with the decision taken: “Tensioned areas should take into account other criteria. For example, if there are houses in the municipality for rent year-round, how many people are on the waiting list to rent a house…”.
The City Hall is concerned about the housing situation in Lekeitio: “Young people do not have the possibility to rent or buy housing in the village, and they will live outside the village or not emancipate themselves until the Berandú.” In fact, almost half of the people ' s homes are second and over half a year empty: “More and more houses are becoming tourist homes, some complying with the law and many others illegally… As I say, the situation is very worrying and it is clear that action must be taken as soon as possible.”
Despite the fact that the City Hall is waiting for the response to the request made to the Basque Government, they report that they will “analyze the data well” and will continue to study the possibilities of intervention in housing.
