'The other day, in the middle of Bentaundi, Brother Xabier was killed'
- It will be 50 years since the murder of the ethnicity of Txabi Etxebarrieta by the civil guards in Bentaundi on Thursday. In Bentaundi, the historic activist Jokin Aranalde made a flower offering and spoke a few words. From there they come in the alleyway to the Plaza de la Renaissance. Itziar Aizpurua spoke at the political event: "Thank you to all of you who have been militants, who have brought the people here, but above all, thank you to all of you who will continue from now on." Haimar Altuna, head of the Foundation of Gipuzkoa, said that Etxebarrieta’s death came “at a significant moment, when in the Basque Country the resistance to Franco’s regime, the consciences of the Basque culture, language and workers’ struggle converged”. Altuna remembers the struggle that this generation started and mentions that this could be a utopia, that they are now going to become reality. "So act, go ahead, and take a look at freedom," he concludes with a cry.
In fact, the recently created association Etxebarrieta memoria has chosen the slogan A look at freedom to name the events that will take place these days. Today in Toulouse, on Thursday, June 7, the Cemetery of Derio will host a flower offering to Txabi Etxebarrieta and in the evening a demonstration will be held from the Church of San Antón to the Plaza de los Hermanos Etxebarrieta.
