Laudio ranks ninth on the Spanish asbestos deaths list
- 13 deaths in the most populous municipality of Ayala. Asviamie will present a motion in Laudio and in the municipalities of Euskal Herria that appear in the top 10 positions of the list.
Laudio is ranked 9 out of the Spanish municipalities with the highest number of asbestos deaths per inhabitant, with 13 deaths (70 in total per 100,000 inhabitants).
This has been announced by Asviamie through a press release. The Association explains that the investigation has been carried out by digital journal journalists Moncloa.com, in collaboration with professionals from nine European countries.
Asviami works against this carcinogenic material, highlighting that 6 of the Basque municipalities occupy the top ten positions: Beasain occupies the second place, Sestao the third, Santurtzi the fifth and Barakaldo the seventh. Portugalete, for its part, occupies tenth place after Llodio.
The association reports that 748 deaths have already been recorded throughout the Basque Country and 7,622 in the Spanish State in the last 20 years.
Motions in municipalities
Although the use of asbestos was banned in the European Union in 2001, Asviamie recalls that this material has not yet been removed from cities and towns.
In this sense, the association will present motions in the six related municipalities, including Llodio. "Municipal entities must take the necessary measures to ensure that asbestos existing in public buildings is located by April 2023, before 2028, in compliance with Law 7/2002".
