In Navarre, one in four municipalities is at serious risk of depopulation
- The Department of Territorial Cohesion, through the Directorate-General for Local Administration and Depopulation, will soon launch two calls for aid amounting to EUR 1.7 million, aimed at local entities, to promote actions and investments aimed at alleviating depopulation. These are two lines of subsidies that contribute to the improvement and/or expansion of municipal public services.
In the last 30 years, they have lost 17,400 inhabitants. On the other hand, the municipalities that have accumulated population in the entire state have increased their population by 100,000 people in the same period. 90% of the population of Navarra live in municipalities without risk of depopulation and 10% in municipalities at risk.
By area, the Pirenaica Region stands out, which is at risk in its entirety. The Prepyrenees are also at extreme risk in all their municipalities, except Aoiz, Elo and Urroz, which are not municipalities in danger. Most municipalities in the Sangüesa, Middle Area, Tierra Estella and Larraun-Leizaldea region are also at risk of becoming uninhabited. In addition, in the counties of Baztan-Bidasoa and Sakana there are also municipalities that are at risk, although to a lesser extent and with lower risk.
Finally, it should be remembered that areas with a higher degree of depopulation have higher rates of aging.
To cope with this situation, two calls for aid of EUR 1.7 million will be forthcoming for local authorities to promote actions and investments to alleviate depopulation. These are two lines of subsidies that contribute to the improvement and/or expansion of municipal public services.
The first line of aid will be EUR 1.2 million, which will make it possible to finance the expansion or reform of administrative, social, cultural, sports, recreational and tourist areas, as well as the renovation and/or acquisition of homes for rent.
The second call for grants, with EUR 500,000, aims to finance current expenditure activities and projects aimed at alleviating depopulation.
