This week the City of Lasarte-Oria has launched the initiative. Campaign. The campaign has been launched to raise awareness about recycling and the "correct separation" of waste from Lasarte-Oria, a "cynical" campaign, according to the Lasarte-Oria Clean Air platform. On Tuesday night they have concentrated on Okendo Square to show their rejection of the campaign and ask the government team to raise their awareness.
Data on the recycling of Lasarte-Oria were first recalled at the hearing. They have explained that Lasarte-Oria is one of the least recycled municipalities in the whole of Gipuzkoa: "In 2019 it selectively collected only 45% of urban waste, while the average of Gipuzkoa is 54.35%, so Lasarte-Oria is practically below ten points."
They insist that this is not a question of voluntarism: "It's not about funding a new awareness campaign, seeing if citizens are encouraged to do a little better," he added. They admit that improving the selective collection rate is the responsibility of "all", but they do not see those responsibilities at the same level: "The bad manager is characterized by blaming those who have not done well for others." They add that the City Council does not establish an efficient system of selective collection of urban waste and that, therefore, the responsibility lies with them.
They have also explained that there is no reason to believe that they have greater or lesser ecological awareness than the Lasarteatarras, Hernani, Urnieta or Andoain. However, in these municipalities the rates of selective waste collection are 74%, 70% and 63% respectively: It is therefore not a question of volunteering or raising awareness, but a question of the system.” They stressed that the municipalities that have implemented "effective systems" for the selective collection of waste, "whatever the parties in the city hall, have achieved good results".
Consciousness is important for the group, but the effectiveness of the system is "decisive." Thus, the residents and neighbors of the plaza have asked the City Hall to raise their awareness and not to do so in the hand of Construction and Contracting Promotion (FCC): "He is one of the most interested members of the incinerator's oligopoly," he added.
"Lack of awareness of the City Hall"
They highlight that Lasarte-Oria has been one of the last municipalities to offer its citizens the possibility of collecting waste selectively, and that once offered the option, it offered the "worse" system it could offer: "It chose the poorest system and the least recycled system and, since then, has expressly refused to introduce any improvement," he added. They add an example to this explanation, explaining that those who recycle at Lasarte-Oria do not receive any subsidies or discounts: "Those who recycle and those who don't recycle pay the same."
Cynical campaign
That is what the City Council has just set up the Thing of All! Campaign: "cynical" and two reasons have been put forward for this. On the one hand, Aire Limpia has thought that the City Hall wants to do as if it were in favor of recycling and that the fact that it did not take more steps towards recycling is "express" because that is what the organization wanted. On the other hand, the platform has stated that the responsibility for Lasarte-Oria not recycling "enough" lies with the Lasarteatarras: "Of course, the City Hall would like to go further, but the citizens are not aware enough to say yes," he added. But you're clear about one thing. "Here's the city council that needs to be made aware and it's time."
"Acting honestly and assuming responsibilities"
The hearing was held in Okendo Square at the request of the Ertzaintza. "We call on the City Hall to act honestly and to assume all its responsibilities once and for all," he added. They have also asked him not to waste time in "meaningless" discussions about underground and surface cubes: "The technical reports in this regard are conclusive and indisputable and the establishment of an effective adult recycling system". On the other hand, he has also been asked to play less cynically at Athletic Club.
The City Hall of Donostia-San Sebastián announced at last Thursday’s plenary session that it will increase the waste rate by 26.5% from January 2025, claiming that Waste Law 7/2022 obliges this. Eguzki, for its part, has denounced that the law only applies in terms of costs,... [+]
Recently, the UPV/EHU organised a series of summer courses to address the issue of climate change. The Environment Minister, Asensio, took advantage of the courses to highlight the incinerator’s positive contribution to climate change, which is surprising, since for every tonne... [+]
