However, it is not clear how the events have happened. According to ELA, “while the head of the company moved several wooden parcels with a wheelbarrow, other wooden parcels slid and fell on a worker working in the area, getting the operator trapped.”
According to LAB, the worker was working in the warehouse with the forklift in inventory work and “for unknown reasons, the load he was carrying fell upon him”. According to the Basque Department of Safety, the accident occurred at around 13:30 hours, when the worker "fell one piece on top". LAB has recalled that in 2015 another worker died in the company, as a result of the impact of one piece in it.
ELA considers that “the lack of preventive measures is, once again, the origin of this new accident”. According to the union, companies do not adapt prevention measures to each job, which increases the number of accidents and occupational diseases. Precariousness in the workplace has increased considerably, which has directly affected the health and safety of workers.”
LAB calls for rigorous research and for “clarification of possible responsibilities”. According to the union, 63 workers at the Bizkaibus plant died in 2024. In the ALS data you can read 65 deaths: 20 in Bizkaia, 18 in Gipuzkoa, 3 in Álava and 24 in Navarra. According to the trade unions, in 2023 more than 100,000 accidents at work resulted in death.
LAB has posted on its website the fatalities that have occurred between 2007 and 2020. In the opinion of the trade union, these data show that more measures are needed to control occupational health by companies: “The number of observers needs to be increased and Osalan should be able to punish, not just advice.” Most occupational accidents, however, are not traumatic, but are due to heart attacks, strokes and other diseases.
