An initiative to combine vegetation and toponymy
- The importance of vegetation in Basque toponymy is evident. If Itsaso and Itsasondo are in the interior of Gipuzkoa, it is not by the sea, but because they are toponyms associated with the cola plant or cola.En this sense, since Eibar has made a nice initiative: in the neighborhoods with toponymic name the city has planted trees and bushes of the same name.
Trees and shrubs of species with the following names have been planted: Urki (birch), Ipurua (juniper), Gorosta (acebos), Aginaga (group of teeth) and Saratsuegi (sauces).
In particular, in the Urki Kurutzekua park, three birches have been planted (Urkidi is documented as the old name of the Urki neighbourhood); in Ipurua, in the gardens of bolategi and Argatxago, near the well-known football field, five juniper trees (the gin drink is derived, incidentally, from the fruit of the ass); in the five Gorosta district, taxis.
