'Vocational training is totally related to the business world and the business world has been quite Castellanoparlante', says Ainitze Blanco, Director of Vocational Training at Hernani and President of Elkar for the strengthening and improvement of Vocational Training at Laneki.
It was precisely to change this reality that, in 2001, the aforementioned Society was established between the Ikaslan Gipuzkoa, Ikaslan Bizkaia, Ikaslan Araba and Hetel associations. Their aim was to 'Euskaldunization of Vocational Training' and they are, among other things, thanks to the cooperation of the municipalities of Buruntzal.
The language of school materials, an obstacle
In this sense, we proceeded to translate the didactic material to Euskera, because “it was also a problem that many materials were in Spanish and that, when teaching in Euskera, made it difficult”, explains Blanco.
As a result, on the www. - jakinbai.eus website, there are currently 801 teaching materials translated into Basque from 24 professional areas.
In addition, in 2010, the Laneki association launched the Vocational Training dictionary. In 2017 it became a collaborative dictionary and thanks to it, it already has 11,000 terms to facilitate the learning of Vocational Training in Basque.
Follow up in companies, studies in Basque
In the first obstacle, therefore, the Laneki association is immersed in the learning process, but a second step is also necessary to euskaldunify the entire learning process: “It is very important that Euskaldunes students have the opportunity to practise in Basque as well”. Not only for the student himself: ‘It is also noted in society’, says Hernani’s Director of Vocational Training.
It has an impact on data. Currently, 40% of students are studying Basque in Vocational Training, and for this figure to be even higher, the City of Elburg is working on it.
In the practical aspect of the studies, the first contact with the Commission recognizes that they are positive: "62.74% of the undergraduate students in Vocational Training go to Euskera and 52.24% of the Dual students go to Euskera".
As part of this training, the Deputy Foral of the Department of the Environment has continued in recent years: ‘The Directorate-General for Equal Opportunities grants subsidies to companies wishing to do so in Basque for training in workplaces’. In particular, in 2018, a total of 90 companies in the territory received aid amounting to EUR 72,000.
But it is not just a matter of quantity, ‘companies are more aware’, says the Director of Vocational Training at Her. From Salestar College in Urnieta they also say that the ‘need’ has increased.
Promotion of the Basque Government in the learning process
In addition to Laneki’s work with the material and strength that the Deputy Foral is doing for training in Basque, the Basque Government is giving a ‘push’ to the learning process in Basque, in the sense of Ainitze Blanco. Also the City Hall of Buruntzaldea, which encourages every year students to learn in Basque.
A reflection of this is the implementation of model B+ of models A and D: “According to these standards, there is only one group in Basque and Spanish with Euskaldunes and Castilian speaking students. On some issues they double, and then Euskaldunes already have a guarantee that some issues will be made in Basque’. Tackling one of the problems in Model B is to reduce the ability of Spanish and, in the meantime, "encourage apprentices to enroll in Model D".
In fact, the Sales College of Urnieta takes the view that ‘a student who has studied ESO or Baccalaureate in Euskera has the right to continue his education in Euskera’.
New Center in Lasarte-Oria
It is therefore a question of assessing the opportunity to study in Euskera, and this has taken a step forward in Buruntzaldea. The existing centres were added a new one in the previous course: C.E.I. de Lasarte-Oria (School of Construction of Gipuz).
Currently, Vocational Training in Models D and B can take place in five levels of learning: the Leizaran Institute of Andoain and the La Salle Berrozpe College of Andoain, the Institute of Dual Vocational Training of Hernani, the Usurbil Professional School, the Salesian College of Urtic-the Basque Institute.
The latter is the only center in Gipuzkoa that offers training on the topic of construction. They offer two medium-grade and one higher-grade cycles: “There is a lot of work and very few students,” underlined the study director Lidia Alcerreca.

"This has once again served me to immerse myself in the world of Euskera"
The urnietarra Veronica Sánchez is practicing the upper cycle of Sociocultural and Touristic Animation at the Magale College of Urnieta. Having completed the theoretical part of the higher education cycle Sociocultural and Touristic Encouragement in the Vocational Training of Hernani, the Urnietarra Veronica Sánchez is in internship at the Colegio Magale of its locality (former Colegio Presentation de María).
Her mother tongue is Spanish and she has learned Basque at school: “I studied Primary Education and Compulsory Secondary Education in Basque and later Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish. That has served me, once again, to immerse myself in the Basque world”, explains the student of Urnieta, happy.
It accepts: “Since my mother tongue is Spanish, I find it hard to speak in Basque, and if you don’t speak, you lose the trend.”
Precisely, to avoid this, Sánchez’s objective was: “If we do not want to lose the language, doing Vocational Training in Basque is a great opportunity”. Also for work: “If you want to live and work here, you need to.”
“If there were more students, everyone would come out with the work”
The EAGI College had its first course in Lasarte-Oria. From the three cycles, this course was able to form a unique model in model D.
After 25 years in Altza, EAGI started its course last year at The School of Construction of Gipuzkoa in Lasarte-Oria, 'Lanbide had a number of irons vacant', explains Lidia Alcerrikas, director of the company. We have therefore not taken the first promotion for the time being.
It is the only center of Gipuzkoa that offers training cycles around the building theme. They offer three. Two means: Building Technician and Interior Works Technician, Decoration and Rehabilitation. And a superior, the senior technician in the organization of works and choreography.
Although they offer model D, the group is not always created: “We always try, although we know little, to encourage them to speak in Basque,” says Alcerreca. This year, a higher grade cycle has emerged in model D and a medium grade in model A. It recognises, however, the existence of an ‘Euskaldun environment’: ‘95% of teachers are Euskaldun’.
But the problem is another one. “There is a lot of work and few students. If there were more students, they would all go out with the work”, and in some cases, “the Basque is necessary”, says Alcerreca.
