Next Friday, the mobilization will take place at the Plaza San Roque de Portugalete, convened by the trade union majority. So far this year, at least 57 people have died in Euskal Herria from an occupational accident.
Pulling the case of Portugalete, the unions have worked hard on the construction sector and falls to the standard. In the words of ELA, “it is incredible that the necessary safety procedures for high-rise works are not yet being complied with and that there are therefore fatalities at work”. LAB asks where is the “campaign they sold us” from the social dialogue table in 2013, aimed at promoting occupational health and safety in the construction sector. “Eight years later, we remain the same, we still do not put preventive measures, prey, deadlines, etc. prevail, in short, poor working conditions, precariousness still prevails in this sector.”
Blind, deaf and mute public administrations
Once again, the unions have focused on the basic causes, “on the lack or lack of organization of work and on the precarious conditions that impede rights,” said LABs. The reality is that the workers pay daily the benefits of a few with healing, blood and, sometimes, life. The employer is responsible, but we cannot forget these blind, deaf and mute public administrations. Administrations must put this problem on the political agenda, once and for all and as a matter of priority”. In the words of ALS, “job insecurity and lack of investment in prevention generate suffering and death. If prevention is not put in place before production, more workers will get sick and die. This cannot be solved without changing the lines of work that until now are not known. Non-compliance in preventive matters should be pursued and sanctioned with greater strength and means”.
