On 14 April last, the Basque Government announced that it will allocate EUR 10 million more to the Euskaltegis of popular initiative. The agreement with the Euskaltegis for the Euskaldunization of adults and of HABE aims to improve the conditions of the teaching staff. For example, a wage hike and a reduction in the number of working hours are foreseen.
For the LAB union, however, in a communiqué, the union considers that the signed agreement "is not enough".The proposal has not been transferred to the legal representatives of the workers, who have denounced that they have been left out of debate.LAB has indicated that they have had a channel of communication with HABE, as they have long asked to participate in the protest on behalf of the workers.
They have also welcomed the fact that the adult Euskaldunisation sector is improving its funding and stabilising, but the agreement does not take into account the public dimension of the sector, which drives privatisation and deepens the public/private divide. For the union, the proposals for wages and working hours are a significant step forward, but he has pointed out that the implementation of these measures is left to each Euskaltegi. In his view, this is not enough for the workers to get out of precariousness.
LAB has therefore asked HABE to open a framework for the debate on the Basque teaching model. In addition, he has asked the owners of the private Euskaltegis to constitute an employer because in the coming weeks LAB will convene a negotiating table in the adult Euskaldunization sector.
They also stressed that, in their view, Euskaldunisation and literacy should be universal, free, public and of quality.
