About twenty people have met this Monday morning in Maule to participate in the Bizi Climate and Ecology March. The Northern Basque Country will be the starting point, setting the objective of arriving at Baiona on Saturday. The ecologist group aims that the candidates for the elections in Ipar Euskal Herria take the climate emergency seriously in their program and sign a Pact for Ecological Metamorphosis.
What the candidates have been asked is the development of renewable energies, the commitment to the circular economy and waste reduction measures, the promotion of the use of the Basque currency, support for local and quality agriculture, work for quality public transport, as well as the development of measures to reduce electricity consumption. Whoever wishes to commit himself will sign the “Eco-metamorphosis Pact”.
"Elected officials can use many levers of action at the level of local houses and schools. Thus, on the road to limiting climate confusion at a local level, these popular elections appear to be decisive: it is the last mandate for climate", according to Bizi's spokeswoman! Dominika Durruti. The march will also call on voters to vote in favour of the signatories to the pact, who have signed an agreement.
The march, which will travel 120 kilometres by foot or by bike, will arrive in Baiona on 7 March. At 15:00 hours, a "claim" demonstration will be held in the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca. The list of signatory candidates from Uztaritze will be made public on 5 March.
