The grant agreement of EUR 13,000 for the renovation of the dressing rooms of the municipal sports club has been blocked for five months by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa.
From the Department of Culture headed by Denis Itxaso of the PSE, they have emphasised that public agreements must be signed in the two official languages of the CAV and are not made "on a whim", but by respect for the rights of all Gipuzkoan citizens.
However, the position of the Representative has not convinced the City of Elgeta and have ensured that the law gives the right to act in this way if one of the parties asks to do so in Basque.
The mayor, IRAITZ Lazkano, added that in the letter received from the Provincial Council a “threatening” tone has been used, as it leaves in the air that if it is not signed in Spanish it will be subsidized. The mayor has pointed out that if a neighbour of Elgeta wanted to receive the information in both languages, he would have no problem in doing so.
While the two institutions are still in the linguistic controversy, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa still does not pay the agreed subsidy to finance the renovation works of the sports clubs.
