At the end of July, the Generalitat published data on municipal waste generated in Catalonia in 2019. According to this data, the amount of segregated waste at source has risen from 41.8% to 44.8%, the highest figure ever, 1.8 million tonnes of waste.
Berguedà (68.82% selective collection) has been the first region in the ranking of recycling ahead of Osona (65.4%). The reason is very clear: The municipalities located on the axis of the Llobregat River, the most populated in the region, established a door-to-door pick-up at the end of 2018. The evolution has been clear: In 2017, Berqueda ranked 36 out of 42 regions. In 2018 he moved to the 20th place and in 2019 to the 1st place. The recycling rate of the 12 municipalities of the Berguedá region with door-to-door system is 83%.
The associations and foundations Ent analyzed in 2013 that the average percentage of waste generated by the door-to-door system in the Catalan municipalities, depending on the population, falls by 15.3% immediately after its implementation.
In several Catalan localities, the door-to-door system has been present for more than two decades. Example of Tiana de Barcelona:
In general, city photography has improved significantly. In 2018, 129 municipalities exceeded the 60% limit, a target set by Europe. In 12 months this figure has almost doubled and risen to 224. In addition, another 172 municipalities have found that they separate between 50% and 60% of the waste generated in the Biscayan municipality.
On the other side of the coin are still the 551 municipalities that send more waste to rejection than to all recyclable fractions.
The councillor of Territory and Sustainability of Catalonia, Damia Calvet, has considered the involvement of local entities "fundamental" and has been convinced that "more efforts" are necessary to increase selective collection. It has insisted on the need to put in place effective systems, such as door-to-door, smart containers, pay-per-generation models, and to ensure that trade and services carry out adequate selective collection.
The City Hall of Donostia-San Sebastián announced at last Thursday’s plenary session that it will increase the waste rate by 26.5% from January 2025, claiming that Waste Law 7/2022 obliges this. Eguzki, for its part, has denounced that the law only applies in terms of costs,... [+]
