On 1 October 2017, thousands of citizens were persecuted in Barcelona for holding the referendum. So far only some of the police chiefs who led the operation were charged, but now they were only charged in case 7 of Barcelona. The Court of Inquiry No. 2 of Madrid has notified the charge of eight Chief Inspectors of the General Administration of the State.
Although it has not been precisely determined who was responsible for the charges, the court has called on all police officers to be declared and ordered to investigate the orders received by the officers.
The Centre for the Defence of Human Rights considers that the fact that all police officers are charged is "a great change". Anaïs Franquesa, an expert lawyer in criminal law, believes that the leaders responsible for the violence they ordered to practise in the 27 centres that were held to vote should declare.
