Count the people living on the street: if you don't answer the refugee issue, don't expect miracles
- This Thursday the people living in the streets of Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa will be counted. Public institutions committed to reducing the number of homeless by 20 per cent, but the poor response to the refugee crisis makes it difficult to meet the forecast. We look at the case of Bilbao.
The Bilbao Neighbourhoods platform has supported an average of 120 migrants without institutional support over the last three months. In the absence of institutional responses, neighborhoods and social groups took the responsibility of caring for these people and since then 150 volunteers have worked. They have also been supported by platforms such as Ongi Etorri Errefuxiatuak and have met together in solidarity to protect the basic needs of immigrants.
According to the last count of August last year, at least 300 people were homeless in the streets of Bilbao, but popular pressure on this situation seems to be starting to bear fruit. Of the 100 users staying in the Bizinahi district of the Bank of Deusto, 40 were transferred on Monday to the residence of Oñati, under CEAR (Spanish Refugee Assistance Commission), and another 20 people have been transferred to the centres of Busturialdea and Arrigorriaga. In addition, the municipalities of Galdames, Ermua or Bakio have shown their willingness to receive immigrants who are still in their localities.

On Thursday, the biennial night count of homeless people will be held in many Basque municipalities. According to data from 2016, the number of homeless people in the Basque Autonomous Community stood at 2,009.
