Assange has been without freedom for ten years. First, detained at home; then, seven years have passed without sun or fresh air inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London. He was expelled and arrested in April 2019 after a strategy of espionage against the journalist and his family and lawyers – a Spanish company dedicated to the security of the embassy placed cameras and microphones in all rooms at the request of the secret services of EE.UU.
In 2010, Wikileaks, with the help of large media outlets, published one of the largest leaks in the history of "secret" documents. Over 700,000 files of the U.S. intelligence services, which evidenced the opaque and cruel diplomatic and military actions of many governments and states. Among other things, the savage torture of Abu Ghraib prisoners in Iraq and several war crimes committed by US public officials. Among the twelve deaths were Reuters reporters Saeed Chmagh and Namir Noor-Eldeen, among others.
Since then, American justice has tried to extradite him. In January 2021, the trial was suspended, as a judge decided to suspend extradition, after his lawyers argued that the risk of suicide should he be transferred to an US jail. However, the case came to the United Kingdom Supreme Court, which decided to accept extradition. Now, that decision has only ratified it. Assange's lawyers have insisted that his situation is serious and that the risk of suicide in a U.S. jail.
The Interior Minister, Priti Patel, has two months to take the decision whether or not to extradite Assange, which is in the hands of the London Government. In particular, the 2003 Extradition Act allows the Supreme Court to resolve the suspension of extradition. Assange’s lawyers have already announced that they will appeal the Court’s decision to the Supreme Court.
