"I think yesterday's criticism comes from a misunderstanding. Interested in this, it was announced that the Azkarate landfill will not be a recycling plant. Who is against recycling and reuse? ". These are the words of the mayor, Javier Zubizarreta, who gave today, Wednesday, several explanations about the construction of the waste management plant of the company Larke 360 in Azkarate.
The mayor of Azkoitia pointed out that in this area "non-hazardous" waste generated in construction and construction will be classified, transformed and reused, and said that the objective is to recycle and reuse them. Furthermore, Zubizarreta has stated that it is not for him to judge the project arising from the private initiative: “My mission is to clarify that it is not a landfill and that it is not a facility where hazardous waste is treated.”
The first issue also referred to the lack of information on the matter until yesterday it was published in the Official Gazette of the Basque Country and disseminated in the media. "The City Council has not intervened at all so far. It was a supramunicipal issue. One private company asked the Basque Government for authorisation to start the activity, according to the same source. It's over," he said. The mayor explained that "nobody" knew if the permits were to be approved, but that once all the permits were obtained, the City Hall will not be able to "voluntarily stop" the project. In fact, the Basque Government has given its approval to the project and has pointed out that it is up to the City Hall to process the business licence.
In the midst of the tumult, the mayor has asked all parties represented in the council to "position" this issue because the consensus among all "is an important value". The mayor added that at the spokesman's meeting yesterday at noon in the council, the company's president, Larke 360, explained that "no one was dissatisfied."
The Azkoitia City Hall has also specified that 40 such areas exist in Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, and that the activities planned in the Azkarate area are: collection and transport, characterisation of non-hazardous waste, storage and classification. "Subsequently a recovery or recycling process will be carried out so that the processed material can be reused in the works. Cement, lime, plaster, brick, concrete, metals, wood, glass or plastic were recycled". The mayor explained that in the neighborhood of Lapatx, in Azpeitia, a zone of this kind was wanted: "Lapatx wanted to launch a similar initiative and all parties voted in favour. He’s standing because he can’t change the statutes.”
The City Hall of Donostia-San Sebastián announced at last Thursday’s plenary session that it will increase the waste rate by 26.5% from January 2025, claiming that Waste Law 7/2022 obliges this. Eguzki, for its part, has denounced that the law only applies in terms of costs,... [+]
