The government accuses Madrid of jeopardizing 9,000 public jobs in the Basque Country
  • The Government of Spain has presented an agreement to determine the percentage of replaceable casualties in public employment, which in many cases does not rise above 50%. The Basque Government warns that the agreement is “very detrimental to the Basque Country” and that it will jeopardize the 9,000 jobs foreseen for this legislature.

The measure that Madrid wants to impose on the communities is a mechanism that has been used in times of crisis to reduce the number of officials of the Spanish State, explains Andrés Zearreta, Deputy Minister of Public Service of the Basque Government. He warns that during the crisis this rate has been at 0% in some areas.

As a result of this measure, the 9,000 jobs they plan to call in the coming years will be at risk, Zearreta said. In fact, only jobs that are lost due to retirement or disability can be replaced, thus making it impossible to increase the number of workers, according to the Government. “We will make a Public Employment Offer, but without the possibility of improving the services we offer to citizens,” he said, according to the Call.

The unions have called for the abolition of fees so that they can replace 100% of casualties, as well as an increase in the number of workers to compensate for the cuts in recent years.

For the ELA unions, the agreement “serves to destroy employment and impede labor rights.” For UGT-Euskadi, this is an “important achievement” because it “will reduce job loss and temporary employment.”
