Workers in the sector will report that the Basque Government has forgotten the spectacle technicians
- On Thursday, the technicians of the shows called will concentrate in front of the headquarters of the Basque Government in Bilbao to make a joint statement. At 11 a.m., dressed in black, they will present their tools to denounce the situation that they live from the state of alarm and the forgetfulness of public institutions.
“The spectacle and event technicians are still in a state of alarm,” you can read in the poster that the newly created Tekniker union has launched to convene the July 2 rally. This new agent brings together performance arts technicians, shows and events that denounce “an unsustainable situation” for the measures taken to deal with COVID-19. They have stressed that they live “a real risk of unemployment” and that they are unable to survive “among other reasons for the lack of support that only benefits a small part of the sector”.
The technical sector is the unregulated sector. Professionals working in this field have uninterrupted working hours, lack of occupational safety and, above all, the situation they have suffered in this context of the pandemic: they have been left without entitlement to unemployment benefits. They have started to mobilize to try to cope with this situation.
It is explained that, in the case of a technician, it is not uncommon that, despite performing the same work, they are classified in different job figures - fixed, casual, work and service workers or discharged into the self-employed regime. In order to clarify this disorder, the union has called for a collective agreement to regulate these matters and to be supported by technicians.
The Basque Government has made specific requests: an additional aid for workers in the sector of up to EUR 1,200, which guarantees a minimum income in the face of the precarious work caused by the pandemic; that the technical sector of the capital contributions received should not be left aside to ensure the continuity of employment; that the temporary Employment Regulations should be lifted until “normal” – or at least the work can be continued until it is possible to do so.
