Steilas representatives presented this week at a press conference the result of the plant’s investigation. As explained, the questionnaire has been sent to 65.4% of the students from the public centers of the 4 ESO. The results “can be extrapolated to the other territories of the community”, they have assured.
Some of the most significant data are:
In some centers, 83.8% of the students are of migratory origin, and this is where the situations of poverty are most found among the students. In the non-segregated centers, 15.9% repeat the course and in the segregated centers, 33.3%. In segregated centers 60% of students are not considered Gasteiztarra, in non-segregated centers this figure is reduced by half. In segregated centers, more than 50% of students of migratory origin live in the Basque country in their own centers, which are not segregated. Journalist Mikel García delved into the report on the situation of segregation, its causes and consequences.
The objective of the research is twofold. On the one hand, to know the “situation” of students of migrant origin and, on the other, to analyze whether the educational system guarantees equal opportunities. Steilas underlines the clear conclusion: “It has become clear that school segregation violates rights and opportunities. Therefore, we can say that our school system is not based on the principle of equal opportunities.”
