What happens at sea starts at the height of our house
- The vision of plastic flysch has generated in recent times jaleo and concern about the pollution and dirt on our coast. But much of the waste that has ended up in the sea has passed through our territory, and this is rarely mentioned, not even specified. It seems that we find it much easier to put the problem out, but it also has its roots here.
The media here do not give us too many possibilities. People should internalize that those images of the sea are also ours and that we are obliged to overcome the problem. That should be the work of the media. However, we are told that the problem of thousands of kilos of marine waste is global. That does not help at all, much less when we are told about India. Nor do the local institutions implement the necessary measures in the face of this scourge. They don't educate us.
How many canals, rivers, rivers and banks I see, dotted with black and white plastics or other types of waste. How many times I keep looking at the Urola River and how many times I see plastics and other kinds of waste taking their way, marching to the sea like a boat. With these kinds of images at the same time, it is clear to one that neither the citizens nor the institutions give the importance they need to the subject: we are not aware that we have a great problem with the environment. But I am convinced that, judging by the environment and the rivers, we are forced to change their situation, so I cannot keep quiet.
It cannot be allowed to circulate up and down with the pollution of the sea and not to talk about the state of the rivers, as it has a direct relationship with what happens there. The waste does not end in the container or place concerned, but in any place. Here's the key: we're dealing with a management problem.
Canals, rivers, rivers… are the veins of the sea and everything that happens here is reflected in the sea. I repeat: what happens at sea begins at the height of our house.
I have no doubt that we have to rise to another level of consciousness. We see them very quiet, stained by our rivers, because every two or three years we clean up and take hundreds of kilos. Waste and garbage are not waiting for us, they are dependent on water, and if we take hundreds of kilos, thousands and thousands of pounds are landed in the water.
We have to internalise that the disposal of waste in the river is a problem that causes great damage to the environment.
The implementation of campaigns and awareness-raising measures by local councils and foreign ministers, and their maintenance over time, can be a major change. It is in their hands and it is their duty. We have everything to gain, with small gestures the achievements can be great.
Therefore, we know where the problem begins, how waste gets into the river and into the sea… so we have already travelled most of the way. If we are really offended by the sea situation and we want to change the images that come to us, let us take a step forward. Start returning the rights that have been taken from the river.
