Yesterday, Sunday, the SOS Ría platform called on the citizens to create a giant human chain to demand the installation of new screens, the reorganization of the port and the paralysis of the project for the construction of a fuel pump in the Plentzia estuary. On Sunday, a human chain called for a halt to the proposed extension of the fuel tank and the construction of a fuel pump in the Ría de Plentzia (Bizkaia). The protest was called by the SOS Ría de Bilbao platform, which supports the initiative. The project has been promoted by the Directorate of Ports and Maritime Affairs of the Basque Government and by Euskadiko Kirol Portuak (EKP).
In the opinion of the SOS Ría de Bilbao platform, "the Gran Bilbao celebrates its centenary. gives a 20th century project more than the 20th century." They have also denounced that the project, "without taking into account the ecological, social, tourism and economic impacts that may result from it".
According to the calls for mobilisation, a total of some 1,400 people met yesterday to form a giant human chain between the San Telmo district and the Shipyard; several boats also approached to join the mobilization in the waters. Through this concentration, the responsible institutions have been asked to withdraw the project and to take into account the opinions of neighbours and users, "we want a river that is not closed, open". They have also announced that they will continue with the mobilisations this Sunday, and that they will be announcing next week.
