What should be done to ensure that what happened in Italy does not happen here?
- Italy is the country most affected by the coronavirus in Europe and the second in the world, after China. The virus has caused more than 15,100 infections and 1,016 deaths, according to the same sources. In the past 24 hours, 189 more deaths have been recorded. The Spanish and French States have nine days to take the necessary measures to curb the expansion of sovereign debt if they do not want to reach the situation in Italy.
Euskal Herria is still far from this data, but the number of contagious infections that grows every day has almost doubled. According to the latest data, there are 11 deaths and 346 infected. The authorities have taken steps and closed all schools throughout the territory for at least two weeks to curb expansion.
Italy also closed all educational centers in the outbreak two days after the main outbreak of coronavirus appeared. In this regard, Ane Irazabal has explained the continuation of all the measures that have been taken. By then, the ten most polluted towns in the north were already isolated, but the rest of the territory was free to move. The problem arose when the Government decided to isolate 15 regions from the north and about 12,000 people left before the total ban was imposed. The displaced to the south were able to spread the virus and the health system in southern Italy is not prepared to deal with this threat. Five days later, the Government limited freedom of movement throughout the country.
They contrast the austerity measures adopted in the ten villages of the initial focus with the flexible ones established for the whole country. And the results are obvious; in those first ten villages there are no new infections anymore. The same has happened in Wuhan (China), the cradle of the coronavirus. The city has become a ghost for a month, but after that strict isolation there is no more contagion; only 8 cases have appeared in the last 24 hours, almost half of the cases of the day before.

Euskal Herria is still in time not to repeat what has happened in Italy. The case of that country has shown that the introduction of flexible bans is not enough. For the time being, the administrations have closed their educational establishments, and although they have asked citizens to leave their homes only when necessary, they have not taken measures to limit freedom of movement.
