The Italian Government has set up a "migration emergency" to identify unauthorized migrants to stay in Italy and facilitate expulsions. To this end, the ultra-right government, led by Giorgia Melón, will allocate five million euros and will last six months.
On Wednesday the Council of Ministers adopted the decision with the adoption of the proposal by the Italian Minister for Civil Protection and Marine Policies, Nello Musumeci. By doing so, they will be able to repeal some of the rules of the legislation currently in force. They will set up more structures to return migrants to their country, for example by opening more repatriation detention centres.
Call to Europe
The Italian Government is asking Europe to intervene in the matter. The vice-president and leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, has called for the union of European countries, and added that migration policy is not "the sole responsibility of Italy, Spain, Greece and Malta".
Musumeci has warned that the problem of migration is a "problem" that will last at least ten years and has stressed that it is facing the European Union.
In 2023 31,000 migrants to Italy
Over 2,000 migrants arrived on the Italian coast last week. The Government has noted that 31,000 migrants have arrived since the beginning of the year, almost four times more than last year. NGOs accuse Italy of negligence. For example, in March he was accused of "intentionally delaying" the rescue of dozens of migrants to "let them die".
