The fines were imposed on the night of October 18, 2023, in connection with a dispute with the Herrera Borderlands. The debate began with a badly parked car in which the villagers spoke to the police in Basque, but the agents ordered them to speak in Spanish. The tension was rising and finally the riot fighters were sent, Ralla and Abendaño were identified and searched and fined.
The citizens appealed to the Ombudsman, believing that the Basque Government had violated their language rights. In fact, the Ombudsman’s Office gave them their reasons in December, as well as asking the Department of Safety and Security to guarantee the attention of the Basque Government. Now, the Department of Safety and Security has lifted the fines.
