Euro-Med denounces the situation of over 8,000 Palestinians who are detained or imprisoned by Israel, according to the CTXT media. The NGO report highlights the human rights violations suffered by the Palestinians, such as mass arrests, rape, torture, forced deportations, disappearances, ill-treatment and murder cases.
Since 7 October, 1,200-1,400 Palestinians have been detained in the Gaza Strip, according to the organization. These arrests have been made by the Government under Israel ' s policy of administrative detention, allowing for the absence of formal charges and trials. Euro-Med compares the situation with Guantánamo prison. It also stresses that detainees suffer physical and psychological abuse. In this regard, Euro-Med has underlined the need to establish an international delegation to access Israeli facilities and, above all, to personally check the conditions of detainees from the Gaza Strip.
Request to the UN and the Red Cross
Euro-Med calls by letter for action to the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights, the United Nations Commission against Enforced Disappearance and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The organization stresses the need for immediate visits by international organizations to these facilities to verify compliance with international law and to ensure that Israel provides explanations for human rights violations. Euro-Med denounces that torture and other forms of abuse are illegal and that its acceptance jeopardises respect for the rule of law and the credibility of the international legal system.
