The area of Imarcoain, which will collect waste from the Region of Pamplona, rises by 33%
- The Community of the Region of Pamplona approved on Thursday the modification of the project of the Imarcoain Waste Centre, which provides for the infrastructure to start operating on 21 January 2026.
The Council of the SCPSA Association, managing the Commonwealth, has approved with the votes against UPN the modification of the contract and the construction deadlines. The waste centre will be used to collect waste from the Region. According to the Commonwealth, it is a pioneer in the Spanish State and will become one of the best signatures in Europe.
With the changes, the project has increased by 33%, from the initial EUR 66 million to the current EUR 88 million, plus VAT. UPN, which has been against the project from the outset, has strongly criticised this rise, “it is a consequence of mismanagement and totally disproportionate”.
The project started in 2016, when the Parliament of Navarre adapted to the Navarra Waste Plan. The project was approved in 2021, but construction works began in September 2023. The resources brought by several groups, including the City Hall, have delayed the construction of the building. On the right track, the waste area will be launched from 2026 onwards.
A number of factors have influenced the increase in the budget according to the Community, in particular the need to adapt to the requirements of the new waste and environment regulations. According to the News Journal, refurbishment work has been carried out in areas such as fire safety, isolation from the production of organic waste and biomethanes, or in the field of occupational safety, among others.
According to Community forecasts, the population and the amount of waste generated will increase in the future. Waste classification will also be increased and new treatment lines will have to be built to allow treatment. As a result, those in charge of the community believe that more material can be recycled.
