Referendum for the reunification of Ireland will be held during this decade
- Mary Lou McDonald, President of Sinn Fein, believes that the future of Ireland will be decided in this decade and that the issue will really be resolved. This has been expressed in the newspaper El País.
McDonalde has been president of Sinn Fein for four years and has announced a referendum in the Spanish newspaper when asked about the possibility of joining the Republic of Ireland with Northern Ireland. “Furthermore, I believe that we will do so in a peaceful, democratic and orderly manner.”

Referendum also in Scotland
In Scotland, Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon proposed holding the referendum on independence on 19 October 2023. The UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, refused the referendum, but Scotland aspires to be able to vote without obtaining the approval of the UK Government.
