Internet freedom at risk
- The European Union will vote on the proposal on copyright this Thursday. If it is approved, Wikipedia has denounced that it will seriously damage the open internet we know today. So much so that Wikipedia itself would be in danger.
“Instead of updating copyright laws in Europe and promoting the participation of all citizens in the information society, this proposal jeopardizes internet freedom and imposes filters, obstacles and restrictions on access to the web. It would make it very difficult to share a news story on social networks or to reach that news through a search engine. Wikipedia itself would be in danger,” says the note from the free Wikipedia encyclopedia.
Many critics have criticized this proposal. Now, Wikipedia is the one that has released the statement and the Spanish version, for example, has its website closed until after the vote. Anyone who accesses the Spanish Wikipedia will only be able to read the notice.
